John Lennon & Yoko On – The Bed-In (1969)

From Front Cover:
All we are saying is give peace a chance. An historic documentary film of peace from John & Yoko’s 1969 bed-in featuring the classic live bedroom version of Give Peace A Chance.

From Back Cover:
1969 was the year that John & Yoko intensified their long running campaign for World Peace.  They approached the task with the same entrepreneurial expertise as an advertising agency selling a brand of soap to the masses.  John & Yoko’s product however was Peace, not soft soap.  They were determined to use any slogan, event and gimmick in order to persuade the World to buy it.

BAGISM Who can forget the wonderful press conference scenes of reporters thrusting microphones toward John & Yoko completely concealed within a large white bag.

HAIR PEACE At this time both John & Yoko were sporting almost identical heads of long hair & we were all encouraged to follow suit.

ACORNS FOR PEACE were sent to heads of state and governments throughout the World for them to plant symbolically.

WAR IS OVER, IF YOU WANT IT  was their campaign slogan which was used two years later on their Christmas single “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)”.

GIVE PEACE A CHANCE  the slogan to become the basis of a world wide anthem of John & Yoko’s, developed out of their two major theatrical events of the Year – the Amsterdam & Montreal BED-INS FOR PEACE. For John and Yoko the Bed-Ins were a simple method of in John’s words, “expending the least energy to maximum effect” for the campaign.  Unable to follow the Amsterdam Bed-In with a similar event in the United States, due to John’s precarious visa eligibility at the time, they chose Montreal across the Canadian border and simply invited the American media to come to them.  On the 26th May 1969 they moved into room 1742 of the Queen Elizabeth Hotel and for seven days from the comfort of their bed, talked Peace to anyone who would listen.  Not surprisingly, the whole world did!

This film is a document of the Montreal event and features John & Yoko in conversation with, amongst others, Timothy Leary, Tommy Smothers, Al Capp & Murray The K and culminates in the classic live bedroom recording of “GIVE PEACE A CHANCE”.  Other featured songs are “INSTANT KARMA”, Yoko’s “REMEMBER LOVE” & “WHO HAS SEEN THE WIND” & John’s acoustic version of “BECAUSE”.
