Believe it or not, there almost was a feature film about the 1969 Texas International Pop Festival which, just like the one-and-only Woodstock concerts held two weeks earlier, had its entirety preserved both on film and reel-to-reel tape. However, unlike the legendary documentation of the New York festivities that dominated big screens worldwide the following summer, the Lone Star State’s contribution to classic-rock cinema never made it past the very-rough-cut stage (for way too many reasons to mention here). Thankfully, though, this feature- length “workprint” of the film (undoubtedly assembled for the purpose of securing a pre-editing distribution deal) is now available for a fantastic peek at what might have been. There is a timing strip at the bottom of the picture throughout the film, it is unobtrusive but the film is still great. This rough cut of the film actually did have one public screening in Dallas shortly after the festival, but severe pressure from several record companies (including threats of lawsuits) forced its exhibitor to cancel all future screenings PLEASE NOTE: While all of the festival’s performers are listed in the opening credits, most of them were not actually featured in this unfinished work. Actual on-screen performances DO include Chicago Transit Authority, Santana, lanis loplin and Led Zeppelin.
