Set against the backdrop of early 1960’s London, England, Telstar tells the story of the world’s first independent record producer, British songwriter and music producer Joe Meek (played by Con O’Neil).  His groundbreaking recording techniques and otherworldly pop records made him the premier indepedent pop producer in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s.  His was a maverick genius who enjoyed phenomenal early success with TELSTAR – the biggest selling record of it’s time.

The film skip’s Meek’s childhood and instead takes us from the beginning of his parternship with songwriter Geoff Goddard (Tom Burke) in 1961.  The story follows his to the peak of his success, his fortunes declining, some bad luck, depression and paranoia forced him into murder and bizarrea circumstances surrounding his suicide in 1967.

A gay man when it was illegal in England, amphetamine addicted, talented but deeply troubled soul, Meek dabbled in the occult.  He is already an iconic figure in the world of British pop.   Far from being a maudlin tale, this stranger than fiction true story is a satirical comic drama revealing the many sides of Joe Meek, a man who is now revered as a pioneer in the field of popular music.
