The Goose Lake International Music Festival was an outdoor rock festival in the Leoni Township of Jackson, Michigan.  The festival was strongly opposed by local residents, who failed to prevent it’s occurence despite attempts at litigation.  Approximately 70,000 advance tickets were sold, but contemporary press estimates that as many as 200,000 attended.  The festival was characterized by the widespread use and exchange of hard drugs.  Local authorities chose not to intervene in the open drug use for fear of rioting.  Festival attendees were forbidden from leaving once they entered.  The festival grounds were surround by a razor-wire fench which was patrolled by helicopter.
